Description The Eastern Goldfields Superterrane of the Yilgarn Craton hosts world-class gold and komatiite-hosted nickel deposits within classic Neoarchean granite-greenstones. See the historic gold mining town of Kalgoorlie. Visit major mines and examine their geological setting. The Yilgarn is covered by a thick regolith blanket that includes salt lakes defining a vast paleodrainage system, transported material, extensive laterite hosting huge nickel resources, and deeply weathered in-situ rock.

This field trip can be booked with a flight from Brisbane to the start point of the field trip inclusive.

If booked with the field trip then your flight will be confirmed as part of the IGC seats allocated on flights .

If you book without the flight it will be the responsibility of the delegate to book the flight to return to the start point of the field trip from Brisbane.

These seats cannot be booked as part of the IGC allocation and you will only have the publicly available seats on the flight.

Itinerary

Day 1 Arrive Kalgoorlie Saturday 11th August
  Delegates fly to Perth in Western Australia and then on to Kalgoorlie and make own way to motel.
  Meals: D Overnight: Motel in Kalgoorlie
 
Day 2 Kalgoorlie Sunday 12th August
  After breakfast there will be a full day of visits, including the Kalgoorlie stratigraphy and geological setting (Mount Hunt section) and the Prospectors' Hall of Fame. Return to your motel for overnight and dinner..

Day 3 Kalgoorlie Monday 13th August
  After breakfast travel by coach to see the St Ives nickel and gold mine, followed by a viewing of the Kalgoorlie Superpit. Return to your motel for overnight and dinner.

Day 4 Kalgoorlie to Leonora Tuesday 14th August
  After breakfast check out of your hotel before travelling to see the Felsic volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks of the Eastern Goldfields (Kanowna area) followed by a visit to the Geological Survey of Western Australia core library, before checking into your motel with time to freshen up before dinner.

Day 5 Leonora to Kalgoorlie Wednesday 15th August
  After breakfast check out of your hotel then travel by coach bus to see the Mafic and ultramafic rocks between Kalgoorlie and Menzies in the Eastern Goldfields. Return to your Kalgoorlie motel with time to freshen up before dinner.

Day 6 Depart Kalgoorlie Thursday 16th August
  After breakfast visit a gold mine in the Kalgoorlie area to view late-basin sedimentary rocks. End of tour. Later transfer to the airport to depart Kalgoorlie in the late afternoon – own arrangements for onward travel.

  1. This field trip is not suitable for children.
  2. The order of days may change depending on mine access.
Equipment Required:
  Participants should be prepared for cold and/or wet weather. Hat and strong walking shoes are essential. Steelcap boots, long trousers and long-sleeved shirts are required for mine-site visits.
