Location
Melbourne is set around the shores of Port Phillip Bay, in the southeast corner of mainland Australia. It is the country’s second largest city and the capital city of the state of Victoria.

Established in the 1830s, Melbourne is a sophisticated European style city with many beautiful public buildings. It became the richest settlement in Australia after the gold rushes of the 1850s and many of its grand buildings date from that time.

Melbourne is often admired as one of the great cities of the Victorian Age (1837-1901) and has an impressive range of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century buildings. Melbourne is often likened to European cities with grand public buildings and many fine parks and gardens and tree-lined around the city centre.

Melbourne is world renowned for its sport, fashion and festivals. The city also has superb dining, major art exhibitions and musical extravaganzas and celebrates many annual cultural and sporting events. It is considered the home of Australian cricket and Australian rules football - the most popular sports in Australia.

Melbourne is an easy city to navigate with the central city designed in a rectangular grid. Public transport consists of trams, trains and buses. One of the best ways to get to know Melbourne is by taking the free City Circle Tram around the streets of the city centre.
